Scoffs is a fish and chips shop on the road with all the amusements and so on in Paignton. If you walk down the high street - I guess you could call it that - you'll know exactly which one it is, especially if they have a person outside with a free box of chips. Inside the shop it is very hot on account of the fact that they fry and batter them behind a grass screen next to the counter. I have never eaten in there but it is very cramped inside and the atmosphere seemed a bit sad and they are slightly overpriced for the portion size.
The chips themselves are delicious. They weren't slimy or undercooked like most chip places, but crispy and cheesy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. Despite the fact that they were a bit overpriced for a chippy takeaway and the staff were slightly rude (not extremely rude but a bit curt), they are some of the best chips I have ever tasted. They are battered on the outside and soft and fluffy (but not lumpy) on the inside. They can sometimes be a slightly but greasy and the fact that no one tells you that they will be battered until they cook and give them to you is a bit off putting but most people come because they tried one of the free samples outside the shop or it was recommended to them by a friend. We did not buy anything else than the regular chips but I once sampled one of their cheesy chips (maybe two or three...) and it was fantastic. They also do battered fish but I am unsure of what else they offer. I would personally come back here for the chips/cheesy chips but unfortunately not for anything else and I would continue to eat out as I have done in my past visits. I would recommend this to a friend for the food but until they improve the staff's attitude and the spacing of the tables I will not eat in here.
Update-
I recently went back here to eat with my friend before we watched The Fault In Our Stars - an amazing new movie. We watched it on release day and sat and ate outside in the sun. The chips were still amazing but inside was still very cramped and the atmosphere had not improved in the slightest. I would still go back for the chips though.
